Advertise In Las Vegas: Retail Sales To Exceed $45.1 Billion in 2023

Apr 10, 2023 4:30:45 PM / by Larry Julius

Despite high-interest rates, inflation, and recession fears, Las Vegas area consumers are expected to spend between $45.1 and $45.6 billion dollars at retail in 2023, according to recent per capita forecasts based on a survey by the National Retail Federation. This will be a 4-6% increase over 2022.

“In just the last three years, the retail industry has experienced growth that would normally take almost a decade by pre-pandemic standards,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “While we expect growth to moderate in the year ahead, it will remain positive as retail sales stabilize to more historical levels."

The challenge for Las Vegas area retailers, however, is keeping a significant share of these dollars in local cash registers. According to the NRF, the amount of money spent online and non-store options will increase by 10-12%. This is nearly twice the growth rate of all 2023 retail dollars and translates to more than a $4.5 billion dollar outflow.

To keep the expected deluge of new retail dollars local, area small business owners will need to advertise to convince Las Vegas consumers of all the benefits of buying from local companies.  By almost every marketing metric, the best way to advertise is on Las Vegas radio.

Las Vegas area business owners have an abundance of options for marketing their goods and services to local consumers. New research from Nielsen, however, indicates that advertising on Las Vegas radio is still the best way to reach local shoppers.

Every week, according to Nielsen, Las Vegas radio reaches 1.5 million adults. This is significantly more than are reached by social media, local TV stations and cable systems, newspapers, streaming video and audio, and podcasts.

In addition to listening to their favorite Las Vegas radio stations over the air, Nielsen reports that 447,352 adults also listen to local stations online every month.

As a matter of fact, according to a study conducted by Edison Research during the third quarter of 2022, among Adults 25-54, 17% of all time spent listening to local AM/FM stations occurs online. This share of online listening has nearly doubled since 2016.

Las Vegas Retailers Can Increase Sales During Holiday Shopping Season

Oct 11, 2019 12:06:00 PM / by Larry Julius

Las Vegas consumers are expected to spend $5 billion on this year's holiday shopping, based on predictions by the National Retail Federation.  This would be a 4% increase over last year.

Deloitte, one of the world's top four accounting firms, forecasts similar growth.

"The projected holiday season growth is, in part, due to the current health of the labor market,” said Daniel Bachman, Deloitte's U.S. economic forecaster. “Near record-low unemployment rates, coupled with continued monthly job creation, may encourage people to spend more during the holiday season. The economy is still growing, albeit at a slower rate. Additionally, we continue to see consumer confidence elevated, which also helps boost holiday spending."

For most Clark County retailers, holiday spending brings in about 20% of annual sales But, long gone are the days when the bulk of this shopping occurred between Black Friday and Christmas.

How Does Satellite Radio Listening Compare To Las Vegas Radio?

Oct 8, 2019 6:10:00 PM / by Larry Julius

Some Clark County small business owners believe that local consumers have ditched their favorite Las Vegas radio stations in favor of music beamed to their cars from space. Is this true?

The short answer is no. Here are the facts.

There are 1.6 registered vehicles in the Las Vegas area.  Nearly 44% of these cars and trucks are equipped to receive satellite radio from Sirius/XM. To use the service, however, drivers must pay between $10.99 and $20.99 per month.

According to Nielsen,  though, satellite radio has had no effect on the number of people who tune-in to Las Vegas radio stations each week.  For that matter, neither has Pandora, a streaming audio service that is also owned by Sirius/XM.

Last week, for instance, nearly 90% of all adult consumers tuned-in to a Las Vegas radio station. Only 17.2%, however, listened to Sirius/XM, which is the only remaining satellite service.

The SHEconomy: Is Your Las Vegas Business Marketing To Single Women?

Oct 4, 2019 4:34:00 PM / by Larry Julius

Last week, according to Nielsen, 365,811 single, adult women tuned-in to a Las Vegas radio station.  This is 89% of every consumer who fits this description.

Why should Clark County small business owners take note of this demographic? A study by investment bank Morgan Stanley finds 41% of working-age women are single. That number is expected to increase to 45% over the next ten years.

The study, called 'Growth of the SHEconomy', indicates that single women outspend the average household in many retail categories. Remarkably, says, Erica Sweeney of MarketingDive, "Women purchase more than half of products traditionally considered 'male' including autos, home improvement products, and consumer electronics."

Nobody Listens To Las Vegas Radio Anymore

Sep 27, 2019 11:00:00 AM / by Larry Julius

OMG! Did you just call the 1.5 million adult consumers who tuned-in to a Las Vegas station last week a 'nobody'?

If you did make that mistake, then you wouldn't be the first Las Vegas small business owner or media professional to do so. Even, Doug Schoen used to share that opinion. He came clean, however, in a Forbes article.

"You wouldn't know it from all the media coverage focused on streaming video and streaming music," writes Mr. Schoen, "but recent Nielsen data shows radio actually has the most reach among American media consumers. 93% of adults listen to the radio each week as compared to 87% who watch TV, a substantive difference."

This is true in Las Vegas, as well, where radio listeners far outnumber the people who watch local TV; read local newspapers; or stream audio sites like Pandora and Spotify; or log-on to social media sites like Facebook and Instagram.

How Vegas Businesses Can Compete For $55 Million In Halloween Spending

Sep 20, 2019 3:34:27 PM / by Larry Julius

Based on information from the National Retail Foundation, Las Vegas consumers will be spending $55 million on Halloween this year.

Typically, 80% of all Halloween shopping, according to the NRF, will occur between now and October 16.  The remaining dollars will be spent in the last 14 days leading up to the holiday.

Nearly 53% of consumers in Clark County are expected to participate in Halloween this year, each spending, on average, about $86.  This money will go towards the purchase of candy, decorations, costumes, pumpkins, and greeting cards.

Almost every type of small business in Las Vegas enjoys a taste of this spending. This includes hardware stores, convenience stores, craft stores, fabric stores, thrift stores, florists, card stores, consignment shops, haunted houses, home decor store, bakeries, and, of course, candy stores.

To claim a significant share of this Halloween cash will require local small business owners to advertise.  The key to successful advertising is reaching as many Halloween shoppers as possible over the next four weeks.

Political Advertising: How To Reach Likely Voters In Clark County

Aug 30, 2019 9:45:00 AM / by Larry Julius

Every vote counts.  Many times the difference between winning an election and losing is a handful of ballots. This is true in races for almost every elected office, referendum, and issue on the national, statewide, and local level.

To win a modern election requires advertising. Successful advertising requires reach. In Las Vegas, the most potent way to reach voters is on local radio.

Last week, for instance, 88% of all registered voters in Clark County tuned-in to a Las Vegas radio station.  This is significantly more than were reached by local TV, local newspaper, or the major social media site like Facebook and Instagram.
