Las Vegas Radio Is The #1 Advertising-Supported Medium

Jul 6, 2022 4:33:34 PM / by Larry Julius

Local business owners have been advertising on Las Vegas radio since KGIX first signed-on in 1930.  But, back then, there were only two options for reaching a mass audience: newspapers and radio.

Today, though, advertisers have an over-abundance of marketing options both over-the-air and online. But every week, according to Nielsen, 1.5 million adults listen to a Las Vegas radio station, giving the 101-year-old medium, by far, the biggest reach amongst local consumers.

A new report released last week by Nielsen underscores AM/FM radio's durable reach among all media.

Advertise On Las Vegas Radio: AM/FM Still Top Choice In Cars

Mar 17, 2022 10:52:56 AM / by Larry Julius

There are about 1,400,000 registered passenger vehicles in the Las Vegas area. Some are cars. Some are trucks. Some are Hondas. Some are Fords. Some are Teslas. Some have four doors. Some have two. Some go fast. Some go slow. Some guzzle gas. Some sip. Some are red. Some are blue.

The one thing that almost every car and truck in the Las Vegas area have in common, though, is the AM/FM radio smack-dab in the middle of the dashboard.

The first car radio went on sale in 1930. It was an invention of the Galvin Manufacturing Company. The company named the radio 'Motorola,' and its cost was $130, around $2000 in today's dollars. By 1935, more than three million car radios had been installed.

Today, AM/FM radio is part of every car and truck on Las Vegas area roads. In addition to the radio, many of these vehicles also provide drivers with other audio options, including a CD player, Sirius/XM, Pandora, Spotify, podcasts, and easy access to personal MP3 collections.

It is fair, then, for small business owners who depend on Las Vegas radio to advertise their goods and services to ask: with all the audio options on today's dashboards, is anyone listening to local AM/FM radio in the car anymore?

Las Vegas Radio Still Reaches More Consumers Than All Other Media

Dec 10, 2021 3:24:03 PM / by Larry Julius

When KGIX-AM became Las Vegas's first radio station in 1930, there was no Facebook, no Cox Cable, no Sirius/XM, no Netflix, and no podcasts. It would be 23 years before there was even a local TV station.  Consequently, it was pretty easy for radio to become the number one reach medium among local consumers.

Over the past 91 years, Las Vegas business owners have come to depend on the mammoth reach of radio among local shoppers to successfully market the goods and services they sell. Advertising on Las Vegas radio has helped Nevada companies to survive and thrive during world wars, natural disasters, recessions, depressions, and even a pandemic.

Heading into 2022, local consumers have more media choices than ever before. But, despite the overabundance of social media, video streaming, audio streaming, cable, and other technological marvels, Las Vegas radio is still the most used advertising medium.

Why Audio Advertising In Las Vegas Drives Purchase Decisions

Apr 8, 2021 1:39:20 PM / by Larry Julius

Las Vegas consumers are expected to spend nearly 7% more at retail in 2021 than in 2020. This forecast is based on recently released data from the National Retail Federation.

To lay claim to a significant share of growing consumer spending, Nevada retailers will need to advertise.

“Think you have a great product?” asks the US Small Administration. “Unfortunately, no one’s going to know about it unless you advertise.”

“Advertising, if done correctly, can do wonders for your product sales, and you know what that means: more revenue and more success for your business."

Scientifically speaking, the fastest way a marketing message can reach the areas of a Las Vegas consumer's brain responsible for purchase decisions is through the ear.  That's why audio advertising can be far more potent than visual messaging.

Advertising In Las Vegas: Radio Listening Little Changed From Year Ago

Aug 10, 2020 10:01:00 AM / by Larry Julius

During July, 1.4 million adult radio-listeners spent two hours per day listening to their favorite Las Vegas radio stations, according to Nielsen. Although local consumers had spent fewer minutes listening at the onset of the pandemic, the current time tuned-in remains little changed compared to a year ago.

Some advertising experts had predicted that as consumers spent more time at home because of COVID-19 concerns, the hours devoted to radio listening would decrease. That, however, was not the case.

In July of 2019, according to Nielsen, 66.7% of listening to Las Vegas radio occurred away from home. During July of this year, out-of-home listening remains virtually unchanged.

Las Vegas Retail Boom: How Your Small Business Can Benefit

Feb 28, 2020 5:32:50 PM / by Larry Julius

Retailers in Clark County rang-up $45,669,580,000 in retail sales last year, according to Nielsen. But wait. It's about to get better.

The National Retail Federation forecasts that in 2020, sales will increase by as much as 4.1%. This will create another $1.9 billion for local small business owners.

“The economy is growing at a more modest pace, but the underlying economic fundamentals remain in place and are positive,” stated NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz. “Consumers remain upbeat and have the confidence to spend, and the steady wage growth that has come with the strong job market is fueling their spending. The state of the consumer is very healthy.

To claim a fair share of this enlarged pool of spending will require Las Vegas small business owners to advertise.

“Think you have a great product?” asks the U.S. Small Business Administration. “Unfortunately, no one’s going to know about it unless you advertise.”

Advertise In Las Vegas: Reaching Millennial Parents

Feb 15, 2020 4:04:30 PM / by Larry Julius

How quickly the millennials have grown up.

According to Nielsen, 71.5% of all Clark County parents with children under the age of 18 are millennials.

From the time their kids are born until they reach they are 17, these young parents will, spend, on average, $233,000 per child. This does not include the cost of college.

Currently, there are 517,742 children under the age of 18 living in the Las Vegas area. That makes the local parenting economy worth upwards of $118 billion. These dollars are being spent, among other things, on diapers, daycare, transportation, toys, education, electronics, clothing, and health care.

For Clark County small business owners interested in competing for a substantial portion of this multi-billion dollar pool of parental cash, they must advertise to millennial moms and dads. By almost any measurement, advertising on Las Vegas radio is the best way to reach this audience.

Why Las Vegas Used Car Dealers Need To Advertise Now

Feb 12, 2020 10:02:00 AM / by Larry Julius

March is the biggest single month for used car sales in Las Vegas. During these 31 days alone, local pre-owned vehicle dealers are expected to bring in $83 million in sales. This will represent 10% of their annual revenue.

By the end of May, these dealers owners will sell more than $230 million worth of pre-owned cars and trucks. This, undoubtedly, makes March-May 'used car season' in Las Vegas.

Although most Clark County used car dealers are small business owners, they do really big business. In all, over the next 12 months, more than 280,000 pre-owned vehicles will be driven off their lots.

To capture a larger share of the area's $830 million used car market requires pre-owned vehicle dealers to advertise. By any measure, the best way for these business owners to advertise is on Las Vegas radio.

How Does Advertising On Pandora & Spotify Compare To Las Vegas Radio?

Jan 21, 2020 1:07:00 PM / by Larry Julius

In 1940, KENO became the first radio station to serve Clark County. Today, 1,502,898 adult consumers tune-in to Las Vegas radio stations every week. This is significantly more than watch local TV or read newspapers.

Las Vegas small business owners, however, also want to know how local radio compares to streaming audio platforms like Pandora and Spotify, especially as it relates to advertising. The answer could surprise many of them.

Pandora was created to provide a personalized radio station catering to the musical preferences of each user.  The playlists were determined by a proprietary algorithm and then streamed directly to each listeners' computer. Over the next few years, the service became available on iPads and smartphones.

Recruitment Advertising: Reach 93% Of Qualified Candidates In Las Vegas

Dec 19, 2019 11:31:00 AM / by Larry Julius

Clark County small business owners need employees...desperately.

According to a report from the National Federation of Independent Business, 26% of small business owners say finding qualified workers is their number one problem.

The report goes on to say that 88% of small business owners looking to hire new employees are finding there are no qualified candidates.

The historically low unemployment figures in Las Vegas appears to be the root cause of local hiring woes. The metro area's jobless rate stands at 4.0%. There are just not enough qualified workers to go around.

Most small business owners have exhausted the traditional methods of recruitment. These include online job board posts, newspaper ads, referral bonuses, and help wanted signs. All to no avail.

To successfully attract the qualified applicants they yearn for, local small business owners need to command the attention of 'passive' job seekers. The number one source for these candidates is Las Vegas radio.
